DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Keolis MHI, the operator and maintainer of Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram, has completed a major overhaul programme for walkways and escalators across the metro network.

The latest milestone has seen 262 escalators refurbished, accounting for 63% of all escalators at Dubai Metro stations.

The programme is designed to improve passenger safety, enhance reliability and comfort, while extending the operational life of key transport infrastructure.

Safer journeys

The project forms part of RTA's wider strategy to provide a seamless, safe and comfortable travel experience for millions of Dubai Metro users. It also supports Dubai's ambition to strengthen its position as a global leader in smart and sustainable transport, while advancing the objectives of Dubai Vision 2030 to make the emirate one of the world's best places to live and work.

According to Dawood Alrais, Director of Rail Maintenance at RTA's Rail Agency, the works included detailed inspections, refurbishment and replacement of essential components such as handrail belts, drive systems and motor units. Maintenance activities were carefully scheduled during night-time hours or planned maintenance windows to minimise disruption and ensure uninterrupted passenger services during busy operating periods.

Better performance

RTA said the overhaul programme has already delivered noticeable improvements in the passenger experience by providing smoother and more comfortable escalator operation. The upgrades have also strengthened equipment reliability, helping reduce unexpected faults and unplanned downtime across the network.

The authority added that the programme ensures compliance with the latest safety standards while supporting a proactive approach to asset management. By modernising critical equipment and maintaining high infrastructure standards, RTA continues to enhance the resilience and long-term performance of Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram as demand for public transport continues to grow.
